Sincerity
Last night I was at a bbq during which the topic of sincerity came up. It's an interesting concept, one I've thought about quite a lot. My first opinion was quite naive- there's just no need to be insincere. Is this why sales people and politicians are considered evil?
What if you fell quite ill while overseas but knew you would eventually recover? Would you tell your folks back home? What would you achieve besides giving them needless worry? Information is such an influential thing- we should be responible for how we give it, and for that matter, how we receive it too.
So is lying a good thing then? Of course there is no simple answer to this. What the hell do 'good' or 'evil' mean anyway? They are only an over-simplification to appease the masses. Then again, there is spirituality and religion, but I won't go into these for now.
So back to my point- being insincere in measured doses I think is a necessary 'tool' people use every day. I think it can easily be abused, and that's when the pollies, sales guys and managers screw up. What do you think? How often do you find a need to tell only the partial truth? Or even outright lie? There's actually quite a stigma attached to admitting to this, isn't there?!
